A Characterful Stable Conversion Designed for Family, Friends and Everyday Retreat
The owners of Rhubarb Cottage approached us with a vision: to transform an existing stable building into a warm and welcoming retreat where family and guests could relax, reconnect and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Although compact in size, the space needed to work exceptionally hard. Our brief was to create a comfortable living area, dining space, kitchen, bedroom and en-suite, all within a modest footprint, while ensuring the cottage felt open, inviting and effortless to live in.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was designing for two distinct personalities.
She was naturally drawn to calm, understated interiors inspired by nature—soft greens, muted blues and warm, earthy neutrals that reflected the gardens surrounding the property.
He preferred a more confident and expressive style, favouring rich blues, layered patterns and bold character.
Rather than choosing one direction over the other, we carefully blended both styles into a single, cohesive scheme.
Natural materials, textured fabrics, vintage-inspired details and carefully considered colour choices created a home that feels both peaceful and full of personality. Every room flows naturally into the next while allowing each client’s preferences to be reflected in subtle and meaningful ways.
As passionate gardeners, the clients wanted the interior to feel deeply connected to the landscape beyond the windows. Throughout the cottage, the colour palette, textures and materials were selected to echo the changing seasons and celebrate the surrounding countryside, creating a seamless relationship between indoors and out.
